Google Pixel 3a XL vs Samsung Galaxy S10e: Two worthy opponents

first_imgPremium smartphones that are relatively affordable are in vogue this year. Apple made the iPhone XR, which is its “affordable” premium phone, a bit more palatable by slashing its price to Rs 59,900. Google launched brand new smartphone series – the Google Pixel 3a series – starting at Rs 39,999 to entice new customers who may not want to spend Rs 70,000 on a Pixel. And Samsung, well Samsung launched an “affordable” premium smartphone called the Galaxy S10e along with the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 Plus. For those who aren’t sure about its price, the Samsung Galaxy S10e is available at a price of Rs 50,900 on Amazon and on Flipkart.Earlier this week, we compared the Google Pixel 3a XL with the Apple iPhone XR. While there was a huge difference in the prices of the two phones — the Pixel 3a with starting price of Rs 39,999 is at the lower-end of the premium spectrum while the XR is the higher end — we compared because these two phones are the cheapest way to get the best of Google and Apple. A comparison between the Google Pixel 3a XL and the Samsung Galaxy S10e, however, is more reasonable price wise. So let’s get down to it.Design and displayThe Google Pixel 3a XL comes with 6-inch full HD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2160×1060 pixels. It has single camera in the front, which is neatly tucked inside the large bezels of the phone alongside the earpiece. At the back there is a fingerprint sensor, placed in top quadrant of the phone diagonal to its rear camera. As far as the overall look and feel of the Pixel 3a XL is concerned, it looks almost identical to the Pixel 3 XL smartphone. However, there are two crucial details that separate from this smartphone from the more expensive Pixel. One is the presence of a glass in the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones and the other is the presence of a 3.5mm jack in the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones.advertisementThe Samsung Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, comes with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 2280×10280 pixels. It has a notch-less design with a single punch hole camera in the front. On the right side there is a long-ish power button, which also houses the fingerprint sensor. At back, there is a horizontally stacked dual rear camera setup with a flash, which is placed directly above the Samsung logo. The back of the Galaxy S10e is made with 3D curved glass and it supports reverse wireless charging just like its pricier siblings. The Galaxy S10e is definitely jazzier than the Pixel 3a XL. It is compact and hence easier to operate with one hand. It doesn’t feature ugly bezels on top and bottom and the fingerprint sensor on the side simply adds a stroke of genius to the overall design. And yes, it does have a 3.5mm jack.As far as the display is concerned, on Pixel3a XL the colours are a bit warmer and a bit dull. Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, shows brighter and livelier shades on its screen. Pink look shinier, and yellow doesn’t seem boring at all on the Galaxy S10e screen. The difference is subtle, yet it is there.Performance and softwareGoogle’s pocket-friendly Pixel smartphone — Pixel 3a XL — sports 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory and it has Qualcomm Snapdrgaon 670 in its core. As far as the software is concerned, it is powered by unadulterated version of Google’s Android 9.0 mobile operating system and it comes loaded with Pixel-y features such as the Active Edge, Digital Wellbeing and Now Playing.Samsung’s budget phone – Galaxy S10e – on the other hand, gets 6GB RAM with 128GB expandable storage capacity. Alternatively, there is a 8GB RAM plus 256GB memory variant as well, but that costs a bit more. The S10e runs on the same Exynos 9820 chipset that powers its pricier siblings – Galaxy S10 and S10+. This makes it more powerful in comparison to the Pixel 3a XL smartphone, which unlike Pixel 3 that comes with Snapdragon 845 chipset, comes with an older processor. In terms of the software, Galaxy S10e runs on Android 9.0 Pie with Samsung’s One UI interface. I haven’t got to spend enough time – not as much as I have with Pixel 3a XL – with the Galaxy S10e. But in my limited time with the device, I found it to be a smooth sail. The credit for this, I believe goes to Samsung’s One UI. It makes Android Pie, which in case of Pixel 3a XL I found to be a bit rough, working smoothly. Overall, I believe Galaxy S10e has an edge over the Pixel 3 XL in this department.advertisementCameraGoogle’s Pixel 3 smartphones are the best camera phones available in the market right. The company’s machine learning software allows Google to achieve with single lens what others do with two or three cameras. The company has brought the same technology that powers the Pixel 3 cameras to its Pixel 3a smartphones. The Pixel 3a XL features a 12.2MP rear camera with dual pixel technology and OIS and EIS. On the front, the phone sports an 8MP camera. The Samsung Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, comes with dual rear camera setup with a 12MP wide-angle lens and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens and OIS. On the front, the phone sports a 10MP selfie camera with live focus feature. But the performance matters not the hardware, there are differences in the kind of photos the Pixel 3a XL and the Galaxy S10e click. While Pixel 3a XL produces images with warmer shades, Galaxy S10e produces that look brighter than those produced by Pixel. In simple words, red in the India Today logo looks brighter and peppier and the sky looks a lot lighter in case of the Galaxy S10e. Both the phones, however, maintain depth and clarity to the tee. The same can be said about the portrait shots as well. Pixel images are close to what you see in real life. Clear, detailed, balanced and perhaps a bit warmer. Galaxy S10e images, on the other hand, look a whole lot brighter, almost as if they have been colour corrected. Both the phones, however, preserve details and shadows well. Selfies, however, are a different ballgame altogether. The Galaxy S10e, even without the beauty mode, whitens and brightens everything up. It’s a good feature for those who want their smartphones to capture flawless selfies. The Pixel, on the other hand, is your mirror. It will show you your freckles and tired eyes just as a mirror would. And now the million-dollar question, which phone has the better night mode. Well, the answer is the Pixel 3a XL. The Pixel 3a XL’s Night Sight is way better than Galaxy S10e’s Night Mode. The difference is apparent not just in colours but also in clarity. BatteryBattery is one of the key differentiating factors between the Pixel 3a XL and the Galaxy S10e. While the Samsung Galaxy S10e sports a 3,100mAh battery with support for fast charging 2.0, Pixel 3a XL comes with a bigger 3,700mAh battery with an 18W fast charger.During our review, we found the Galaxy S10e to provide a day long’s battery life on light to moderate usage. Pixel 3a XL, on the other hand, supports you for a time close to two days on light to moderate usage.advertisementIf battery is key, then the Pixel surely gets my vote.Pixel 3a XL or Galaxy S10e: Which one should you buy?The decision to pick one phone between the Google Pixel 3a XL and the Samsung Galaxy S10e isn’t as simple a choice as picking between a smartphone from Google or Samsung. Even though they might have a similar fabric underneath – Android 9 Pie that is – there is a world of difference between the two phones. In the end, it boils downs to this simple bit: what features are you looking for in a phone and what all compromise you are willing to make for it. If a great camera with a long battery life is what you a looking for then Pixel 3a XL is you perfect pick.
