Mahela Jayawardene to take over from Rikcy Ponting as Mumbai Indians head coach

first_imgMahela Jayawardene has been appointed the head coach of Mumbai Indians from the next season of the Indian Premier League. The franchise announced on Friday that he will replace Ricky Ponting, who had been with the Mumbai franchise for the past four seasons. Ponting had spent four long years with the team in various roles – as a player, an advisory role under John Wright and then he took over as the full time head coach from Wright.Ponting was appointed as the captain of the Mumbai Indians in 2013 and the former Aussie skipper played a key role in Mumbai’s first triumph. He selflessly dropped himself from the squad as he failed to perform, paving the way for Rohit Sharma to lead the side to their maiden IPL title. He also guided Mumbai to their second title in 2015 as the head coach, he oversaw a dramatic turnaround after Mumbai lost the first five matches of the season. As Jayawardene takes over from Ponting, he will hope to replicate the success as well. The 39-year-old Sri Lankan batsman brings a lot of experience with him on the table. The former Sri Lanka captain recently served as the batting consultant for England ahead of their Test series against Pakistan in the UAE.Jayawardene played for Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.Paltan, our new Head coach, @MahelaJay has a special message for you.
